New Age Verification Recommendations
Ofcom has detailed recommendations aimed at effectively identifying social media users aged over 16. A forthcoming social media ban in the UK will restrict access for individuals under this age to major platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Adults may also need to confirm their age through proposed verification methods, pending government approval. The challenge of verifying ages below 18 is significant, as many 16 and 17-year-olds lack traditional forms of identification.
Proposed Methods for Verification
To tackle age verification challenges, Ofcom has suggested several methods deemed highly effective. These include photo ID matching, where information from a photo ID is compared with a live image, banking-based checks utilizing financial institutions' records, and digital ID services that allow users to verify their identity and age. The responsibility for implementing these checks ultimately lies with social network providers, who must develop their own solutions to comply with the new regulations.
